John John Florence Takes Down Kelly Slater at Volcom Pipe Pro

The North Shore’s own John John Florence made history yesterday when he was crowned the Volcom Pipe Pro champ. This victory for John John, who’s been a staple in the surf scene since he was old enough to walk, proved to be a milestone: it was his fourth win at the event in five years. And perhaps even better than claiming a win in your own backyard at a prestigious contest like the Volcom Pipe was the fact that John John bested Kelly Slater in the process.

While the duo have a mentor-mentee relationship, Slater, who’s 42 and an 11-time world champ, has trumped the young Hawaiian upstart in two of the most dramatic matchups of last year. For John John, his win yesterday proved to be redeeming.
