For the better part of the past month, the northern coasts of the Hawaiian islands have been belted with one massive swell after another. Big-wave boards, Jet Skis, tow ropes and adrenaline have been pushed to the max as the El Nino winter kicks into gear. As we’ve come to expect, Turtle Bay ambassador Kai Lenny has continuously been in the mix, hucking himself over the ledge on both the North Shore and at home at Jaws, also known as Peahi, on Maui.
December proved to be a tumultuous month for surfers on the North Shore. Even for the most talented surfers in the world, a session at Pipeline can often be akin to playing with fire. Earlier this month, famed World Tour competitors Owen Wright and Bede Durbidge found themselves in an extended stay at the hospital following nasty wipeouts at Pipeline. Wright suffered a concussion and Durbidge a fractured pelvis, likely putting a major damper on his career.
