Turtle Bay Resort to Host Annual North Shore Ocean Fest,

Featuring Educational Activities, Entertainment and Locally Sourced Cuisine,

to Benefit the North Shore Ocean Education Coalition

NORTH SHORE, OAHU, HI (March 19, 2013) – The North Shore Ocean Education Coalition, which supports ocean education for Hawaii’s youth, will hold its annual Shore Ocean Fest fundraising benefit at Turtle Bay Resort on June 1, 2013.

The free celebration will include notable speakers; film screenings; a silent auction; educational activities; vendor booths; locally sourced cuisine; and music and entertainment. The 2013 Ocean Fest will also include poster and literacy contests themed “Malama i Ke Kai (Protect the Ocean),” open for submissions from students at all Hawaii K-12 schools from April 1-30, 2013. This year we will also sponsor a Film Fest competition for short films on the ocean, culture and community.

“After the success of last year’s partnership with Turtle Bay to host Ocean Fest, we have since organized several educational efforts at the resort, including the popular ‘Welcome Back Whales’ event in January,” said Dotty Kelly, coordinator of the North Shore Ocean Fest. “We are excited to offer a full schedule of action-packed activities at this year’s Ocean Fest, both in and out of the water, for our keiki to learn about environmental conservation.”

The North Shore Ocean Education Coalition includes involvement from the NOAA Fisheries Service; the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary; the Monk Seal Foundation; the nonprofit Malama Pupukea-Waimea; education and environmental stewardship program Navigating Change; Hui O Hau‘ula; and Turtle Bay Resort. The coalition assists in providing curriculum, materials, and learning opportunities to teach youth and the community to care for the ocean.

“This event is inspired by the value of kuleana — or responsibility — to ensure the sustainability of the ocean through education and protection,” said Drew Stotesbury, CEO of Turtle Bay. “We invite everyone, especially our keiki, to participate in Ocean Fest and learn from Hawaii’s top leaders in ocean conservation.”
