This victory for John John, who’s been a staple in the surf scene since he was old enough to walk, proved to be a milestone: it was his fourth win at the event in five years. And perhaps even better than claiming a win in your own backyard at a prestigious contest like the Volcom Pipe was the fact that John John bested Kelly Slater in the process.
While the duo have a mentor-mentee relationship, Slater, who’s 42 and an 11-time world champ, has trumped the young Hawaiian upstart in two of the most dramatic matchups of last year. For John John, his win yesterday proved to be redeeming.
